Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic, deadly disease that affects about 30,000 people in the United States. People who suffer from cystic fibrosis have abnormal function in their secretory glands, where they excessively produce thick mucus that can affect the reproductive, respiratory, and digestive systems. Most patients suffer from cystic fibrosis affecting their lungs, where mucus can easily accumulate and block their airways.
As people age, this disease tends to get worse and worse, and many individuals end up dying as a result of complications related to the disease. The median age that people living with CF is 33.4 years old, though many people, with increasing access to technologies that make living with the disease more manageable, are now living into their 50s and 60s.
The Cystic Fibrosis Fund
Chances are you know someone that lives with cystic fibrosis or someone that has been affected by it through a loved one or friend. In fact, CF has affected us, right here, at Kozloff Stoudt. One of our attorneys, Brian F. Boland, is the co-chair of the Cystic Fibrosis Fund, created by the Berks County Community Foundation. His passion for bringing attention to this disease and finding a cure comes from a sad reality — losing his brother, Kevin, who died from CF-related complications at age 39.
Boland recently interviewed with WFMZ-TV discussing the 18th annual Valentine’s Gala, a cystic fibrosis event, that is now partnering with the Berks County Community Foundation in an effort to develop a fund that will directly help people in need, rather than directing the funds to a national research campaign.
The goal of this year’s event, which will be held on February 9th, 2019, is to provide direct aid to individuals in need. Boland, in his interview, stated the following:
- “There’s been considerable progress made towards finding a cure, but now, what we hope to be able to do, is help kids and young adults right here, in Berks County, with things like purchasing nebulizers and new vests, which cost $15,000 a piece, which would aid directly in their treatment.”
